Use of geothermal energy for air conditioning

A vegetation-covered roof level and one of the largest geothermic energy systems in Europe also make the building in the Ümraniye district of Istanbul one of the most ecologically attractive shopping malls in the world.

The geothermal system located below the shopping square heats and cools the building.

The geothermic system located beneath the shopping square was one of the greatest challenges during the construction phase. The system is used to both heat and cool the building. The boreholes for the geothermic supply extend 150 meters into the ground, and several kilometers of pipes are needed to distribute it throughout all the buildings in the center.

Geothermic systems use the earth’s warmth for heating and cooling, or with the appropriate supply temperature, for generating electricity. Apart from areas near the surface, compared with almost every other kind of renewable energy it is the only one not to originate from solar radiation. Virtually all geothermic energy originates as heat released in the earth’s interior.

The large area, vegetation-covered roof construction was a great challenge for the engineers. The roads, surfaces and facades were erected by May. The planting of vegetation began in June 2007 and this part of the landscape has been completed by the opening in August
