Business base Istanbul-Ümraniye: optimum location between the two bridges over the Bosporus

Meydan enriches the 12 million city of Istanbul with an additional attraction

In deliberate contrast to simple shopping blocks and existing styles of shopping centers, METRO Group Asset Management built its green shopping square right in the heart of Istanbul’s Ümraniye district.

In the last few decades, Ümraniye has grown into a lively city district with over 650,000 residents. Numerous international businesses are now based here, and attract young, well-educated people from all over Turkey.

This booming part of the city primarily profits from what is an excellent infrastructure: it is located directly on the main arterial road between the east and the west parts of the city.

The history of the Ümraniye district is symptomatic for Istanbul’s boom in the last century. Until 1950 Ümraniye was still a small village on the outskirts of the city, though well known to Istanbul residents who had to drive straight through it on their way to the Black Sea resort of Sile. There were no great plans for Ümraniye in the 1980 development plan, which foresaw the development of the shore of the Marmara Sea. Urban planners seem to have considered Ümraniye somewhat unattractive; it had neither a clear view of the sea nor was it close to the historic city center, just inhospitable high land. But what they didn’t consider was that Ümraniye is situated exactly between the access roads to the two bridges over the Bosporus – one was opened in 1974, the other in 1988 – which means it is right between the two life-essential arteries of the city. This position thus made the strip of land attractive for factories and businesses, for residential buildings and retail temples. Companies like Bosch, Bayer and Siemens now have their headquarters here. Ümraniye has about the same number of residents as Düsseldorf and is one of the fastest growing quarters of Istanbul.

Istanbul, with its population of 12 million, is the Turkish administrative base for the METRO Group and its sales brands Metro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra, Media Markt, Saturn and Galeria Kaufhof. METRO Group Asset Management’s Turkish base is also in Istanbul, where it has been successfully running the M1 Merkez since 2000. In August 2009 "Meydan Merter", another center in the Merter district had been openend.
