Meydan is Turkish for a market place or meeting place. Since the “Meydan” opened in Istanbul in late summer, as the first ever “shopping square,” it heralds a new generation of shopping centers. It is the green center and the soul of a newly created district of the city on the Bosporus. 
Award-winning Architecture and Technology
Since its opening in August 2007, the Shopping Square Meydan has already received four international awards.
The jury of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) has honoured the Shopping Square Meydan of METRO Group Asset Management with the "Resource"-Award at the European Shopping Centre Awards 2009 ceremony. The special prize is only conferred if the jury considers a project as an outstanding commitment to sustainable development.
Meydan won first place in the Prime Property Award 2008 in the first European Award for Sustainable Real Estate Investments. The Shopping Square prevailed against 90 projects submitted from 18 European countries. Meydan was praised as a real estate project that is distinguished by a “remarkable environmental quality” and “combines it in an exemplary manner with economic and socio-cultural sustainability.”
For its extraordinary innovative architecture, the Shopping Square Meydan was also honored in May 2008 by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Europe with its “Award for Excellence.” With this award, ULI recognizes exceptional development projects for outstanding achievements in area utilization – projects that are innovative and financially successful, make a contribution to their community, are environment-friendly and engage with social needs.
In Turkey, the Shopping Square has received two awards: It placed first in the “Processes” category of the EU Commission’s “European Business Awards for the Environment” and was also awarded first prize in the “Shopping Center” category of the ArkiPARC 2008 Property Awards.
